Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement

BEACONs is advising the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement on the design of ecological benchmarks and protected area networks.

The Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement (CBFA) is a consortium of forestry companies and environmental organizations working towards the development and implementation of a globally significant model for conservation and resource management in Canada’s boreal forests.

The CBFA has six strategic goals. To support information needs related principally to Goal 2: The completion of a network of protected areas that, taken as a whole, represents the diversity of ecosystems within the boreal region and serves to provide ecological benchmarks, we have undertaken a boreal-wide evaluation of the existing protected areas network in Canada's boreal region with respect to representation of ecosystem diversity and provision of ecological benchmarks.

The assessment identifies gaps in representation related to a suite of broad-scale biophysical indicators and opportunities for establishment of ecological benchmarks based on standardized ecological criteria. This Pan-Boreal Assessment will released in the next few months.
